2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games a success for home nations Posted On 16 April 2018

Great Britain won 65 gold medals in total, with even the Isle of Man accomplishing a silver medal!

The Gold Coast 2018 tournament saw England finish the highest for Great Britain, gaining 136 medals altogether. We witnessed the likes of gymnast Nile Wilson win three golds and two silvers, Chris and Gabby Adcock winning gold in mixed doubles badminton in an all-English final, and Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge winning the men’s doubles title.

The England female netball team, The Roses, reached their first major final and claimed gold with a dramatic 52-51 victory against the hosts, thanks to Helen Housby’s last-second winner.

Head coach Tracey Neville said: “It’s my dream come true. The girls have worked so hard over the last international phase. Australia are the renowned world number ones and to beat them at that time, I’m really, really proud – the feeling of that is amazing.”

Wales finished one place above Scotland because of one extra gold medal, coming seventh, and accomplished their best overseas results ever. Elinor Barker won Wales’ first track cycling gold since 1990, with the nation equalling their record total from Glasgow 2014 with 36 medals and doubling their tally of five golds to make ten.

A spectacular closing ceremony yesterday saw Prince Edward declare the Games over, and featured an appearance by eight-time Olympic champion Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. There were songs and poetry about history, unity, equality and inclusivity, before the flag of the Commonwealth Games Federation was lowered and presented to Birmingham, who will be the hosts in 2022.
